Filming in France FAQ

Straight answers on production services, the French tax rebate, permits, crew and visas for international productions shooting in France.

Production services and the tax rebate

The questions international producers ask us most before shooting in France.

What is a production services company in France?

It is the French company that produces the part of your project shot or made in France under contract with your non-French production company: it hires crew, manages locations, permits, budget and payroll, and is the company that claims the Tax Rebate for International Productions (TRIP).

Do I need a French production services company to get the tax rebate?

Yes. The TRIP is granted by the CNC to a French production services company that is subject to French corporate tax and contracted by the non-French producer. The foreign producer cannot claim it directly.

How much is the French tax rebate in 2026?

30% of eligible French expenditure, rising to 40% when eligible French VFX spend exceeds €2M. It is capped at €30M per project, and eligible spend counts up to 80% of the total budget.

What changed in 2026?

The reform approved in 2026 makes the salaries of non-EU actors and accommodation costs eligible, and extends the scheme until 31 December 2028.

Is there a minimum spend or shoot length?

At least €250,000, or 50% of the budget if that is lower, must be spent in France, and live-action projects need at least five shooting days in France. Projects must be fiction (live action or animation) and pass a cultural test.

When is the rebate paid?

The production services company claims it after the close of its financial year, so the money typically arrives months after the shoot. Most productions finance that gap with a bank or rebate lender.

Permits, crew and locations

Practical questions about running a shoot on the ground.

How do filming permits work in France?

Each place has its own authority: city film offices for streets, prefectures for some public spaces, and owners or managers for museums, monuments and private property. We file every request and coordinate with the regional film commissions.

Can foreign cast and crew work in France?

Yes. Non-EU cast and crew need work authorisation and, depending on nationality and length of stay, a visa. We handle the paperwork with the authorities ahead of travel.

Where does Meadow Pictures work?

Everywhere in France, from offices in Paris and Marseille: Paris and Île-de-France, Marseille and Provence, the French Riviera, the Alps and every other region.
